Prostate Problems

The prostate is a walnut-sized gland (about 2x3x4 cm) surrounding the urinary canal at the base of the bladder. Urine passes through the prostate in the urethra. Sperm travels from the testes through the vas deferens and mixes with a cloudy fluid (created by the prostate) to make semen. It is normal for the prostate to enlarge as men age. In some men it grows so large that it compresses the urethra and obstructs urination. That condition is called benign prostatic hyperlasia (BPH).

BPH is the most common prostate problem. BPH may be caused by inflammation, nutritional disorders, hardened or thickened arteries and an imbalance in hormone levels. The first group of symptoms to occur in BPH is called prostatism. Prostate Cancer
