Alisma plantago-aquatica (water plantain) is found throughout Europe and the Far East. The root is harvested before the plant comes into flower and is dried for later use. This herbal root enhances kidney and liver yin energy and is particularly helpful in balancing hormones. Traditionally it has been used to lower blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels. It has also been used in Vietnam for its antibacterial action on Staphococci, Pneumococci and Mycobacteria. In addition, homeopathic remedies are obtained from the fresh root.
